Colorado Architecture Month

April is Colorado Architecture Month, a 30 day celebration of Colorado architecture and design. It's a great time to appreciate architecture and design state-wide, and with the weather warming up we're ready to get out of the office to enjoy a some of the local events.

Doors Open Denver - April 29 + 30
We're very excited about DOD, especially since our very own Mitch has been and will be working hard to make sure all of the volunteers are where they should be, when they should be there for this city-wide event filled with self guided tours, docent guided tours, and special events most of which are free and open to anyone. To help you plan below are just a few of the special events we are excited about:

  • Box City - This free, hands-on event is open to kids grades K-5 to help them learn the process of urban development, architecture, design and planning. Starting with a Building Permit, young designers will go through the design, construction, inspection, and site selection for the architectural project of their choice. Registration isn't required, but is recommended.
  • Synthesizer Sunday - A great way to enjoy the Denver Performing Arts Center (DPAC), musicians will perform music inspired by the architecture of the Denver Performing Complex Galleria, in the DPAC Galleria and Sculpture Park. No tickets needed, just come and enjoy!
  • Wanderbout - Oz Architecture will open their studio doors for a "choose your own adventure" architectural tour of their historical buildings.
"Using directional signs and altered symbols, Extra Vitamins, an experimental design studio, sheds light on often overlooked architectural features, creating a playful journey through the OZ Architecture building."
  • Open Sites - The core of Doors Open Denver are open doors, so check out the huge list of places you've been wanting to visit, and enjoy the tours and open doors all through the weekend. A map of all of the tours is available here

IALD Rocky Mountain: Light Artist Speaker Series - April 21
Light artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's presentation on his interactive installations is going to be a great reason to go to Union Station.
"Lozano-Hemmer will be presenting his interactive installations that are at the intersection of architecture and performance art. Using technologies such as robotics, computerized surveillance, projectors, multi-channel sound systems and telematic networks he creates platforms for public participation that interrupt the ghastly corporate narratives of “architainment” and the identitarian and monologic operation typical of many "son et lumiere" (sound and light) spectacles."

Modern in Denver's Design in Bloom - April 27
This annual event takes the keen architect's eye and turns it to flower arranging. Everything from 3D-printed vessels to displays with sound will be presented at this at-capacity event, but it's not too late to get added to the wait-list.

We'll see you out and about for Colorado Architecture Month at these events and more!
