What They Say About Us
"BurkettDesign has worked with Jon Brooks and his team on a variety of projects since they founded AE Design in 2004. They have a very good lighting group and we have always appreciated their proactive team approach, flexibility and willingness to jump in and start a project even before all of the details are worked out. AE Design also writes a full service fee from the get go—they don’t increase their fees part way through the process without legitimate justification.
We always enjoy working with Jon and his team and they do a good job for us. They are very thoughtful, thorough, responsive and professional—and they produce quality documents designed to code so we don't have issues with oddball problems down the road. Jon brings a lot of knowledge to the table. I wish we had the opportunity to interface with them more often."
Rick Burkett, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP
"I've known Jeff Mullikin at AE Design for a long time. Recently, we've been working on a couple of commercial projects. I appreciate AE Design, more than anything, because they're pragmatic. All of my work is spec and developer-based, so we have to find the right design, yet be effective and efficient. AE Design has been great. They understand the marketplace and offer solutions without a lot of fuss or whining. They just get the job done and they make us look good. That's what it's all about. When you're responsible for a big project, if they aren't on top of it, it reflects on us. I don't have to babysit them, and they know how to do their job.
Electrical is a pretty straightforward, hidden discipline. People only think of electrical when it's not doing what it's supposed to be doing. A lot of consultants need to be told what to do; others want to tell you what to do. AE Design Is in the sweet spot in between. They help us find creative solutions, and their fees are very competitive. They are also highly responsive and have tremendous knowledge of the various services they offer.
To me lighting design and electrical should be integrated. Sometimes it's more energy efficient; sometimes it's more artistic. Either way, I trust AE Design to do a great job without overdesigning, and to deliver what I expect for fair fees."
Kelly Davis, AIA
"Surround Architecture has worked with AE Design on a number of commercial interiors and high end residential projects over the last few years. We've found them to be exceptionally knowledgeable with above average industry expertise in their field, very responsive, honest in their communications, thorough and highly detailed. As a result, we get very few code comments from the city when we work with them.
Over time, our design team has formed a really great working relationship with them. They have earned our trust. We know what we're going to get, and we can rely on that—and them. That's extremely important when you're dealing with complex projects and a lot of moving parts. Ultimately, their work reflects well on us, and we're proud to recommend them to our clients as a part of our design team."
Timothy J. Laughlin, AIA
I chose them for two very different projects at Kent Denver—the Duncan Center library renovation and the Yates Pavilion gymnasium—based on their excellent reputation and work with others at Semple Brown.
Their attitude and the way they approach their projects is also ideal for the way we work. Semple Brown typically has strong ideas for nearly every discipline, including the lighting design, and how we want it to complement the architecture. They came to the process with a very collaborative spirit.
AE Design shared our passion for the projects, were flexible in terms of our design intent, and highly responsive to practical matters such as schedule and cost. The documents they produced were also solid, which is important if you want to avoid a lot of brain damage during bidding and construction. Overall, I truly enjoyed working with them and they were very good at what they do."

"We've worked with AE Design on a couple of developer led, design-build office buildings. We found them to be highly knowledgeable, yet creative and timely as well. Often times when we work with a lighting consultant that is separate from the engineer, their solutions can end up either too expensive or based on extremely complex controls that are way off the charts.
AE Design's electrical engineers are very well versed in practical, simple solutions. They also have solid design skills when it comes to lighting. We appreciate their functional solutions at a fair cost. Especially when we're working with developers. Overall, I thought they did a really good job on the projects we worked with them on, and they offered solid results. I like their integrated approach. It seems more coordinated with only one point of responsibility. When we work with them, we guide the look and feel of the aesthetic to get them started and they come back with good ideas. It's a very enjoyable, collaborative process."
Brad VanArsdale, AIA, LEED AP,
"Our most recent projects with AE Design have been for Mental Health Partners here in Boulder. Working with Jeff Mullikin has been a pleasure. His high level of personal involvement aligns with our value system and the way we do business—I'm a hands-on person myself. Their collective knowledge is great, and their reliable follow-through ensures that things are well-coordinated. In addition, their responsiveness has been better than we experience elsewhere, and they come up with creative solutions for whatever problems arise. This saves us time, and allows us to give better service to our clients so we don't have to make excuses for consultants who are dragging their feet.
The engineers at AE Design are energetic, and they're great team players. The lighting design side of their business is a big plus and their experience in the kind of projects we do, as well as their past performance—especially with keeping projects in budget—is why we feel confident recommending AE Design and look forward to working with them again."
Tim Boers, AIA, LEED AP BD+C,
"I've had the opportunity to work with the lighting designers and electrical engineers at AE Design on a few charter school projects. Their engineers are very thoughtful in how they put project designs together. Their success is a result of asking meaningful questions, creative design solutions along with solid technical expertise. Lighting, electrical and technology needs are often new territory for charter schools. AE Design was instrumental in explaining their recommendations and helping the schools make informed decisions. Their lighting designer also worked with the design team to customize decorative wall pendants that are unique to the school in a cost effective way.
AE Design also provided thoughtful audio-visual design solutions for performance spaces. Their design included theatrical lighting, sound system design, analog audio and control systems. They were instrumental in establishing project scope with the school and developed a priority list for when the school’s theater program expands working within the limits of the project budget.
We will continue to recommend and work with AE Design. They not only successfully meet schedules and budgets, they are enjoyable to work with, skilled, highly competent and overall thoughtful engineers."

"We have worked with Jeff and Jon at AE Design for many years on a number of recreation, fitness, and sports facility projects. We truly enjoy working with them because they know OLC and they never shy away from the unique project challenges that we often face. Most clients understand that lighting and electrical engineering go hand-in-hand because it's easier to coordinate, more efficient, and the fees are more competitive. Experience has shown us that AE Design's integrated lighting design and electrical approach is a great value to our clients and we really appreciate their ‘one-stop shop’ approach.
We continue to team with AE Design because of their consistency, commitment to quality and their reliable service. We're very involved in our projects, and AE Design understands customer service and knows how critical that is to OLC. When project demands change and we need something quickly, we can call them and get what we need in a timely manner. They are attentive, responsive, flexible and they understand what we’re trying to achieve on the design and operations side.
AE Design is a great teammate. They are reliable, highly responsive, and we know they will be there when we really need them. Working with them is an investment in our success, and they always have our back."
Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative (OLC)
"AE Design's detailed approach to their work and ability to produce technically sound drawings are what we appreciate most about them. We have also found them to be very reliable and responsive. As a strong electrical engineering-oriented lighting designer, they understand that the lighting and electrical component of a project can make or break one's perception of the architecture and interiors we design. We recommend AE Design for this reason, for their technical powers, and the ease of working with them."
