Pitkin County Courthouse Restoration
Timeless Design, Modern Duty
The Pitkin County Courthouse in Aspen, CO, has served as the County Seat since its dedication in 1891 and is one of the oldest in the State of Colorado. In 1975, the Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which recognizes the building as worthy of historic preservation. As the building continues to function as the County Seat and a working courthouse, modernization is needed to continue its function for the community. The restoration focused on balancing the needs of a modern office environment with preserving beloved historical details, often requiring creative design solutions. The project team addressed code requirements, accessibility needs, and technology upgrades while staying true to the original aesthetic. Efficiency considerations, such as LED lighting, updated heating systems, and energy usage monitoring, were carefully implemented around decorative features. Where new fixtures were required, they were chosen to complement the historic character and enhance the user experience.
