Sandy Hook Maintenance Facility
Resilience Rebuilt on Historic Ground
Following significant damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the National Park Service initiated plans to create a more sustainable, consolidated maintenance facility at Gateway National Recreation Area within the Fort Hancock Historic Post Area. The project involved adaptive reuse of Buildings 49 and 65, with cost-saving modifications to expand material storage and include minor ADA, safety, and egress upgrades. The primary function of the space remained material storage, with targeted improvements for restrooms and administrative areas. Key to the project’s success were flood mitigation strategies, including raised platforms for all electrical equipment and close coordination with the utility provider to ensure long-term resiliency.
