UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO ANSCHUTZ HEALTH SCIENCES BUILDING
Aurora, Colorado

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus has taken initiative to become a leader in the Rocky Mountain West as well as a national destination for research, education, and personalized clinical care. As such, the Health Sciences Building consists of many different departments throughout the 7 floors as well as a shared event space.

Consisting of several departments throughout seven floors and shared event space, the team crafted a comfortable, home-like retreat for staff and patients by illuminating vertical surfaces with perimeter lighting and enhanced finishes that provide a focal glow for connection and wayfinding while sparking community and collaboration. By highlighting the simplistic and natural elements of design, we incorporated lighting style enhancing interior, and exterior architectural elements into this project.

The project’s exterior lighting was chosen using sustainable selections to enhance a visual connection with nature by subtly illuminating plant life. We intentionally created the convergence of safety, humanity, and nature that meld with the existing adjacent campus sites. The project partners aligned design elements when focusing on the building’s entry. The exterior’s lighting design was also inspired by bioluminescence and reflected illumination of the internal glow of the interior through the façade. This element was studied carefully to create a lantern effect by the strategic placement of interior lighting and connecting the exterior and interior composition. Both up-lighting and down-lighting the V-shaped columns create a grand sense of entry while simultaneously grounding the building. Learn more about the space >
