KENDRICK LAKES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Lakewood, Colorado

Located in Jefferson County School District, Kendrick Lakes Elementary School is an academic excellence recognized school by making great strides in closing achievement gaps for student subgroups. The $23M building was designed for the students and teachers from today to 40 years from now and was in dire need of replacement. The new building includes an interactive learning courtyard, K-12 and 1-5 classrooms, a new playground, and more.

Throughout this project, our design needed to support and update a fun learning environment to accommodate the growing community, replacing the existing dated school building. Playful lighting was used in strategic areas to provide task lighting and wayfinding. The lighting design also had to mirror a high-end aesthetic and effect while staying within a strict budget. Standardized power and technology were provided to support the technology equipment needs in classrooms for active learning environments.

Implementation & Strategy

  • Utilizing indirect/direct lighting in classroom spaces, with dimming capabilities, the design was calculated with Jefferson County standards for light levels in the educational spaces.

  • Recessed lighting and playful patterns within corridor spaces with design elements create ‘moments’ in areas with breakout spaces.

  • Decorative elements to support wayfinding – color-changing ‘portal’ element at classroom wings, decorative spiral at the main entry, recessed linear elements to provide vertical illumination along stairs.

  • Power and technology systems were designed to support both classroom teaching and breakout spaces to allow for flexible teaching areas throughout the school and also provide room for flexibility and growth.
